The Meeting of July 25, 2018 was hosted by Hillcrest Lodge
Great turnout for the 14th MWSA Meeting on 25 July 2018 at Hillcrest Lodge. It was Chris Livingstons final meeting as President and a wonderful year! Congratulations to Robert De Luna, who was elected to the bottom of the MWSA line as Treasurer and to Kyle Wahlquist on being elected the new President! Many thanks to all the officers Kyle Wahlquist, Jeff Haven, Scott G. Hill, Kevin Morton, and George Rutherford for making the year so special and fruitful.
A truly inspirational night for those who attended the election and installation of officers for the 14th District MWSA. Thanks to Past President Richard Hudman for running the election. MW Grandmaster Tommy Chapman and the first lady of Texas were present along with three other PGMs including Jerry Kirby, Wendell Miller and Elmer Murphy. MW Chapman was the installing officer and RW Murphy was the installing Marshall.
President Chris gave a wonderful presentation on servant leadership and leading from the heart. Chris Livingston’s presentation focused on the purpose of MWSA which is educating the leaders of our future. He went on to share thoughts about Operative masons built temples for people. Speculative masonry builds temples of men. Chris shared a Quote by Martin Luther King Jr. “Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” His presentation focused on Servant-Leader – Focuses on the growth and well-being of the organization and the people that compose it versus the Traditional leaders – Focuses on the accumulation and exercise of power by one at the “top of the pyramid”. Servant leadership is to practice humility, not for our own ego but turn the pyramid on its head. Coaching and mentoring is key, Chris had a great mentor who is David Dibrell. Chris shared ten key leadership traits of servant leaders:
Listening – Active not just passive. 360 degree, top to bottom.
Empathy – Separate person from their work. Walk a mile in their shoes. Personable with appropriate individuals
Healing – Help your staff become whole and build a future together
Awareness -self and organization, “sharply weak and reasonably disturbed”, (Greenleaf)
Persuasion –Opposite of positional authority, convince and build consensus quickly.
Conceptualization – make time for strategy
Foresight –
Stewardship – entrusted with resourced of others and return on investments.
Commitment to the Growth of People – “green and growing or ripe and dying” and not just your favorites.
Building Community-through effectiveness and camaraderie
Servant leadership is all about making the goals clear and then rolling your sleeve up and doing whatever it take to help people win. In that situation, they don’t work for you, you work for them. This is definition by Ken Blanchard
President Kyle gave a presentation on five levels of leadership by John Maxwell and shared a short video by Simon Sinek about Infinite players to Finite Players based on the differences of Apple and Microsoft. We are here to serve the lodges with our Lodge Leadership program this year.
